Lord Contractors, Inc. recently achieved Passive House Builder Certification awarded by the Passive House Institute US (PHIUS), one of only 7 such builders in Pennsylvania. Built to meet the world’s most rigorous standard for energy-efficient construction, a Passive House uses about one-tenth the energy of a similarly sized code-built house, a feat accomplished by carefully harmonizing countless design and construction details. The basic theory of Passive House design and construction can be summed up as follows: maximize gains and minimize losses. Buildings that meet the Passive House standard use 80% less energy than conventional buildings. A Passive House conserves energy by creating a virtually air-tight, super insulated, compact building envelope that uses the sun and internal gains to achieve space conditioning. A heat recovery ventilator (HRV) is used to condition extracted air and provide superior indoor air quality. At the time of this writing, just 71 houses have earned the Passive House Institute US (PHIUS) certification. For more information visit this Fine Homebuilding link.
